The letter that started more romances then any other before…And probably more mayhem in relationships as well.
~*Dearest,
There are things in life that are inevitable; I am powerless to control them. The Sun will rise and set, the tide will come in and go out, the seasons will change, the birds will fly south for the winter and return in the spring, and the caterpillar will transform itself into a gorgeous butterfly. Somehow, I feel reassured by this because many other things in life are so transient - so momentary.
Love, from the moment we met, I knew that our friendship would develop into something lasting and precious, just as I am sure that the caterpillar will one day become a gorgeous butterfly.
Dearest, I believe that our love is blessed by God. It is a union of two spirits destined for everlasting happiness. Thus, you have truly become the star of my life which brings me light in this dark world and warmth when I need it. You offer me the promise of renewal, the joy of living, the peace of mind that comes from sharing and caring, and that shoulder to lean on in times of stress. You are my Swallow from Capistrano - my precious butterfly, and I will cherish you and love you forever.

The entire school sat at breakfast that morning, when it all started…When the letter first began its long journey, from hand to hand, person to person. It was around winter time, December 12th; to be exact; it was a very snowy Thursday.
The Owl Post was late because of all the snow—in fact there was quite a blizzard outside, and Herbology was cancelled, so Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs had no morning classes and were very pleased, but disappointed that they hadn’t slept in…
Lily Evans was sitting somewhat quietly with her best friend Jimena Jenkins (A/N Aha! One of my first characters ever created appears again!) Both were talking about what they should do for their free time, Lily was going for studying and Jimena wanted to play Exploding Snap.
“We should use our time wisely is all I’m saying…” Lily told Jimena with a shrug.
“But…Wouldn’t using it wisely also be using it for fun?” Jimena asked hopefully.
Lily sighed, “You can play Exploding Snap, while *I* study then…I’m perfectly happy studying alone anyway.” Lily said going back to her toast.
“But who’ll play with me?” Jimena whined.
“Do you even have to ask?” Lily smirked, and gave a nod towards the four boys who were totally immersed in a conversation about Quidditch; Lily rolled her eyes and Jimena glared, not that Lily hated Quidditch—she was on the Gryffindor team her self.
“I’m not playing Exploding Snap with the Marauders! You know how that could end up…”
“Yes, from experience! I remember clearly having my eyebrows gone for a month!” Lily mumbled grumpily.
“They aren’t all about pranks though.” Jimena said thoughtfully.
“I know…I mean James *is* a prefect.” Lily said, “Though, I have my suspicions he bribed the Professors…”
“Lily! He’d never do that!” Jimena hissed in shock.
“Oh yes he would…He bribed Professor Sinistra about his crush on Professor McGonagall, so he wouldn’t get Detention.”
Jimena gaped openly, “No way! Professor Sinistra has a crush on Professor McGonagall!?” Jimena shrieked, and then burst into giggles. (A/N Sinistra is a man this time around people! NO lesbian McGonagall on my watch!)
A few people looked at them oddly, “Jimena—hush!”
“How ever did you find out?!” Jimena demanded once she had collected herself.
“Well…It was late at night in the Astronomy Tower…Last year…” Lily seemed to be having trouble recalling. “Oh yes! I was meeting Rafael there and I heard James telling him so…I almost got caught up there I was laughing so hard…” Lily grinned at the memory.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?!” Jimena shrieked.
“I hardly tell you *anything* Jimena, you know that.” Lily said, taking her last bite of toast. “I’m going to go study now, see you later Jim!”
“Don’t call me that! That’s a boy’s nickname!” Jimena called back. Jimena was about to leave too, when a letter landed on her plate, it had been dropped by an Owl that looked half dead—probably flew too far in the blizzard.
She picked it up, and studied it…it didn’t have name—it could very possibly not even have been for *her*, but she looked at it, hopefully that owl wasn’t as dead as it looked and it was hers. She began reading it as she walked out of the Great Hall. And her mouth was gaping as she read it…

“Who’s ‘me’?!” Jimena asked no one in particular, and just then she ran into Raidon Chang. She quickly shoved the letter in the Herbology book she didn’t need. Still wondering <Who would send ME a love letter!?>
“I think *me*…Would be…*you*.” He said grinning, the most dazzling smile. <I hope *he* wrote the letter, I hope *he* wrote the letter.> She wished to her self, over and over again.
“Oh…yeah- right—well maybe—no never mind.” She said, deciding not to ask him if he knew who wrote the letter. She decided a different approach. “Do you know where Capistrano is?”
“Oh yeah…I’ve visited there once. It’s a lovely place—it’s known for its butterflies. There were thousands everywhere!” Raidon said enthusiastically. He began saying more about it…but Jimena blocked it out--<*he* wrote it *he* wrote it!> She screamed inside her head. She could just about jump for joy—she’d always liked Raidon, and since he liked her back…*A Lot*, she was going to have to do something about it…
“So…Raidon,” She finally said, just as they arrived at the class he had right then, since Ravenclaws still had class that morning.
“Yeah?” He asked, looking at her expectantly.
“Um…Do you—want to go to Hogsmeade or something sometime?” She asked hopefully.
Raidon looked elated, “Oh yes! Sure, anytime!” He had this huge grin on his face—like potions had been cancelled forever.
“Great…Um, we’ll set a date sometime okay?” Jimena said, also grinning brightly.
“Yes, definitely!” Raidon agreed. “I have to go now, later Jimena.”
“Bye!” Jimena said waving and continuing on her way to Gryffindor Tower. Normally she *never* asked a boy out, and she was lucky Raidon even agreed, because he almost *always* said no to a girl when they asked him, he had most assuredly written the letter to her.
Her smile never faltered all the way up to the portrait of the fat lady in the pink dress.
“Password?”
“Remus Lupin is dead sexy.” She said, smiling even more, as she said the password James Potter had made it up from an inside joke with him and the other Marauders…no one really *wanted* to know how it came about, but Remus *was* pretty damn sexy. If McGonagall ever found out about the password, she would most likely give James a big lecture…
Jimena climbed through the portrait hole, and her smile still hadn’t faded. She found Lily surrounded by books already, and Sirius, Remus and Peter were playing Exploding Snap, while James was looking at a piece of paper, and just staring at—as she got closer she caught a glance of ‘Four Names for a Shrinking Plant’. He was apparently studying for the Herbology test they were supposed to have that day, but had been thankfully cancelled along with the class.
Jimena decided to tell Lily the *news*. She dropped her books, including the one with the letter inside. “Lily, you’ll never guess who I will have a date with, as soon as its set!” Jimena exclaimed plopping down next to her studying friend.
“Who?” Lily asked, not looking up from her notes. “Raidon Chang.” Jimena said, grinning like an idiot.
“NO way!”
“Yes way!”
“He’s so hot!” Lily exclaimed, “You are so lucky.” She said wistfully.
“I know….I asked him out and he said yes!”
“He *never* says yes! You are beyond lucky!” Lily squealed.
“That’s not the best part…He *loves* me.” Lily squealed even louder for her friend.
“OH you are the luckiest girl *ever*! No guy would ever love me…”
“Right and Raidon Chang didn’t just agree to go out with me.” Jimena said sarcastically.
“Still…you are *very* lucky.” Lily told her for the fourth time that day.
“Yeah, this is such a great day—I’m going to go play Exploding Snap now.” Jimena said hurriedly; wanting to get away from the studying before Lily *made* her study. “Watch my books for me?”
“Can I borrow your Herbology notes?” Lily asked.
“Uh sure…they’re in the book.” Jimena said, not remembering that was where the love letter was.
“Thanks…God; everything is just shoved in there like crazy!” Lily moaned, as Jimena left and Lily had to sort out the pages and pages of notes shoved inside the book at random. One of Jimena’s more annoying habits.
Lily found what she needed quickly and grabbed her *own* Herbology book, and shoved Jimena’s notes in there…Not purposely of course, she’d sort it out later.
She began scribbling things and memorizing all the different plants and their uses when, James Potter came up to her.
“Lily, can I borrow your Herbology book mine…Had an accident?” James asked her, as he showed her his own Herbology book which was bright red and gold painted even through the pages—it was soaked and completely unusable.
“Oh sure James…Just let me get something real fast.” She grabbed the notes she needed the most and handed him the Herbology book, containing the love letter. “Enjoy.” Lily said grinning up at him.
“Yeah I will. Thanks a lot!” James said, and went back to his own chair where he was studying… Just then, a large explosion from across the common room, brought everyone’s attention to four people, Peter Pettigrew, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black and Jimena Jenkins, all of who were laughing obnoxiously as they stared at a pile of ashes that *used* to be a table.
James went over, leaving his studies behind and laughed at his friends. Lily came over behind him. “5 points from Gryffindor for immature and dangerous behavior.” Lily said sternly, but she was still grinning.
“And *10* points to Gryffindor for an amusing time.” James countered, grinning at Lily, who glared playfully and with a quickly cleaning spell got rid of the ashes and went back to her studying. James laughed at his friends some more, and went back to studying too. He opened Lily’s book, and a letter fell out. He picked it up and began reading it. His eyes getting wider and wider as he went…

James stared breathlessly. He never knew Lily felt that strongly for him…He never knew them as anything more than casual friends…Nothing that extreme…But he liked the idea of her liking—no *loving* him. It was rather appealing…
He thought for a moment that maybe it wasn’t intended for him…but then he thought to how she’d told him “Enjoy.” Had that meant more then he’d first thought?! And she’d also grinned at him funny—James began to think about it some more…They did have a lot of similar qualities…Even *Lily* had to have some sort of mischievous side to her.
They were both prefects and cared a lot about studying—his past girlfriends had all been more interested in playing games then studying. Yes, James liked to have fun too—but studies were important. Lily had fun too…She was on the Quidditch Team with him—a fellow Chaser actually.
Yes…they had a lot in common—a good match…Maybe he should just ask Lily out… It was funny, that a girl who never showed much interest in him before—was in love with him…It was…weird, scary and wonderful all at the same time.
He put the letter in the front of the book away from the other regular notes, and began searching the book for what he needed to study with…
